I can't stand messy rooms and I don't like the "hide" method. Stone management is one of those interesting little things in DF. Or you can wait until you get your forges up later to reclaim things like economic ores and coal that got mass dumped. These will be used to create both pig iron, an ingredient for steel, and the steel itself. You’ll need a flux stone, such as limestone, calcite, chalk, dolomite, or marble. Same deal as the gems, your workers will automatically look through any reclaimed piles and sort it out for you. While most metals will only need their raw ore and some fuel to be smelted, steel has an extra step and material requirement. You may also want to make a stockpile that accepts Bituminous coal. After issuing a on a garbage stone pile, your workers will automatically sort through it for any gems that got swept up by accident and will carry them to the nearest gem stockpile. *Do* construct a gem stockpile, near your jeweler workshops and make sure it accepts bins (and make some bins). Don't forget to do a final reclaim on the pile after you decommission the garbage dump zone. Periodically issue a on the contents of the pile to claim the dumped stone back and allow your masons, mechanics and stone crafters to use it. More important dwarves should have stone hauling disabled in their menu (under and then "hauling"). Do a few rooms at a time and watch where your lucky morons haul the rock to. Work in small swatches when doing mass dumping of stone. (Sadly, they don't look to see if there is a 2nd closest garbage zone that has a shorter path.)
DWARF FORTRESS STONE USAGE HOW TO
Dwarves are dumb, they sense where the closest dump pile is based on absolute distance, decide to go there then figure out how to get there with pathing. Otherwise you may find your workers traipsing up 15 flights, over 100 steps through some winding path, then back down 15 flights to get to a "closer" garbage dump after selecting a bunch of stone with. Don't have more then one "garbage" zone defined at a time. Try not to haul garbage stone more then 30 tiles early on. I usually make them 2x2 and put them in a small alcove as near to a main set of stairs as possible. If you do know where your main area for your mason, mechanic and stone crafting shops will be, that's a good place to put a dump zone (using to layout a "garbage" zone). If you do layout a stone stockpile, keep it smaller then 3x3, put it smack next to the workshop and limit it to a single stone type. Such as using Limestone for all your mechanisms, or choosing a red/yellow/blue stone for a table/chair/floodgate or mechanism. Unless you absolutely want to use a particular stone type for projects. Having all your dwarves hauling stone the first year can get you into big trouble. And of course it makes a mess out of any corridor or room that you excavate with mining, and doing a mass dump with is very tempting. You have to dig for rock, and you have to dig down past the soil layers to find it (or into the side of a hill with an exposed vein). Unlike trees/plants, exterior boulders lying in fields aren't usable. If you have decided to trade, make sure to get Flux Stones instead of Flux Blocks blocks won't allow you to craft pig iron and Steel. As a fellow newbie, dealing with stone can be a bit tricky. Mining can often be a difficult and time-consuming task, so consider trading and collecting Flux Stone as an alternative. Once the dwarves start digging, they will begin mining the stone and bringing it to your stockpile. You can do this by using the " d" key, then selecting the area to be dug out. With the area marked, you can now dig out the Flux Stone. Though it may not always appear on the pre-embark screen, other resources like Chalk, Calcite, Dolomite, Limestone, and Marble are also counted as Flux Stones. It's necessary to check the pre-embark screen to determine if the site contains this material. Before beginning mining operations in Dwarf Fortress, one of the initial steps is to confirm if an area contains Flux Stone. There are two ways to get the stone: mining or trading. Its most likely to be found in layers of sedimentary or igneous rocks like siltstone, dolomite, chert, and shale, or among igneous rocks like basalt and rhyolite. Obtaining the Flux Stone can be challenging for some users.
